BESPOKE
Every Garden is different. Every persons taste is different and every solution is therefore a bespoke solution. However there are some projects which are more creative than others and require more thought and interaction with the client in order to fulfil their vision. The 'Gothic Folly' above was created for a lovely couple in a dead corner of their garden in Bearsden. They loved classic architecture and had in mind the ruins of a gothic castle in France. And so grew the idea with Lancet arches cut from reclaimed block, reclaimed slab dressed to form sills and copings between grotesques which were saved from the long grass at the reclamation yard. The finish is quite unique, fitting the space and the brief and the very definition of bespoke.
As I acquire new skills, I'm always looking to add something different, another element to enrich the design. Sometimes the job comes out of the blue - for example last year I was commissioned to supply a head stone for a well respected journalist in Berlin. They had tried to find a Scottish monumental mason with no luck, most offering Chinese granite etc, and had been given my number from a colleague in London. All a bit random really but it was an interesting challenge. I sourced a beautiful piece of Caithness stone and met with my client to discuss the details. I have only cut a few head stones and thought for such an important job I'd commission a master to do justice to it. I knew of one whom I had admired for some time and so I contacted Michelle de Bruin and thankfully she agreed to cut the letters. I then polished, packed and shipped the finished article to Berlin, Germany. It became a very personal journey with a lot of client involvement, many emails and conversations about installation, font, sizing, wording and size of stone - which drew on many skills in order to produce the desired result. There is only one Caithness headstone in the Banderserg Cementary, one which draws admiring glances from visiting friends and relatives.
Bespoke is the ability to produce something different. To use the skills and materials required to construct your own version of a theme, one which fits with the clients brief and produces something different or new. This is something I thrive on, it makes the job so much more challenging and interesting and something which I embrace on each occasion. If there is anything unusual you wish to create, be it a stand alone sculpture, a fireplace, a bench, a gothic folly in your garden, get in touch to get things started..
